This will tell you if the monitor, cable, and the board are all functioning from a HW perspective. After reading the EDID, the board will use the EDID as the resolution. You can set the default resolution on the initial power up for the splash screen by adding the following to the uENV.txt file where you can use any resolution you this will only set the resolution on the first stage of the boot process for the splash screen, when the BEAGELBONE LOGO is displayed at the beginning. Add the following command to the optargs in the uENV.txt file on the boot partition of the eMMC or uSD. As a result you will see a lower number of resolutions listed than your monitor may support. When using the modesetting driver, these commands will set the beaglebone black to output at 1920x1080 at 30 Hz: A lot of the instructions below, assume you are using the modesetting driver. If you would like to change resolutions, change the xorg configuration /etc/X11/nf to use the xorg-video-modesetting driver. This does not allow changing the resolutions using xrandr.
BEAGLE DRIVER DRIVER
The latest (as of ) Debian image defaults to using the xorg-video-fbdev driver for xorg. If you have succesfully tested other resolutions, please add them to the list. Your display might not support all of the same resolutions that the BeagleBone Black CEA resolutions support audio as defined by the HDMI Specification.
